New godfather inspired tourbillon watch from Jacob & Co. plays the theme song for the movie

“I believe in America.” This is the first line of the The Godfather1972 classic that started a new genre in filmmaking: gangster movie – though some would argue The Godfather it’s not about gangsters, but about family. Either way, the award-winning film (took two Oscars and five Golden Globes) was the first film that Jacob Arabo of Jacob & Co. saw when he came to America from Uzbekistan.

Fifty years later, as today, the archives contain three films by The Godfather, Jacob & Co. introduced the third watch of the Godfather. It is the most complex version, full of references to the classic mafia tale: the music box plays the Godfather music on demand; the two rotating barrels of the music box are engraved with 13 famous quotes from the movie (“Leave the gun, take the Cannoli”; “I’ll make him an offer he can’t refuse”; “It’s not personal, it’s a business); 13 still shots from the film are painstakingly engraved on the side of the envelope in the order they appear in the film; a miniature piano with the image of Marlon Brando as Don Corleone; the image of the puppeteer’s strings, which were originally on the cover of Mario Puzo’s novel and on the movie poster, was recreated; and in the center of the shield a carved red rose, representing the one worn in Don Corleone’s lapel at his daughter’s wedding. Almost by coincidence, the watch is a three-axis flying tourbillon. Includes the JCFM04 caliber with 634 components.

“When I first came to the US from Uzbekistan in 1979, I was 14, I didn’t know the language, and my family didn’t have a penny’s name,” says Jacob Arabo. “So we went really hard to work. It took me two years to earn time and money to go to the movies. The Godfather he was released again; it was the first movie I saw in the cinema.

The watch was launched in a full immersion style. The brand’s press and VIP customers were brought to Sicily and taken on a tour in the footsteps of Coppola and his film crew, visiting shooting locations around Taormina. It included the church where Michael Corleone and Appolonia were married, the Vitello bar where Michael met Appolonia’s father; an estate that served as Villa Corleone. The aura of authenticity was completed by the presence of actor Gianni Russo, who played Carlo Rizzi, husband of Don Corleone’s daughter Connie. The 79-year-old actor was the star of the inaugural party, gathering an eager audience as he recalled the movie set why Marlon Brando almost fired him and how, as a non-actor but as a guy who was “related”, landed the lead role in The Godfather. Throughout the experience, the theme from the movie was played almost endlessly, by an orchestra or band playing the theme song live – at one point it was accompanied by Russo, who is also a singer. To make matters worse, the ubiquitous cannolis tray seemed always within reach.

Russo, the author The Godfather of Hollywood: My Life in Movies and the Mafiahe explained how he got a role in the movie. During this time, the real mafia boss Joe Colombo, for whom Russo worked, formed an organization called The Italian-American Civil Rights League and launched a campaign to stop the film from being made. Believing that the Italian Americans would be unfairly portrayed in the film, Colombo demanded that the film not use the terms “Mafia” and “Cosa Nostra”. The producers agreed to this and also hired League members (mobsters) as extras and advisers. One of them was Gianni Russo. It was a decision that did not suit the star, Marlon Brando.

“I saw Brando roll his eyes and he calls Coppola and says,“ He’s an important figure; he marries my daughter, he undermines the family, but he’s not an actor… you have to think about it, ”Russo told us at a dinner in Sicily. – He’s trying to fire me. I would never be able to go back to the neighborhood. So I put my hand on him and walk him to the back of the room and say, “let me tell you something, Mr. Brando, I respect your job, but if you screw it up, I’ll suck your heart and bleed out here tonight.” He stepped back and said, “It was great.” He thought I was playing. ” The incident convinced Brando that Russo would be good for the role. He stayed in the movie.

According to Benjamin Arabov, CEO of Jacob & Co., the Opera Godfather’s 50th anniversary watch took four years to develop. “We wanted to create a full cinematic, graphic and musical reminiscence of the cult classic Francis Ford Coppola that surpassed all previous iterations. In June 2021, we spoke to Paramount Pictures, from whom we acquired the rights to The Godfather, and began discussing how to prepare for the film’s 50th anniversary. One of the things we wanted to do was recreate scenes from a film reel and we decided to do it on the side of the case. The etching was definitely the biggest challenge. ” Images are rendered in 256 shades of gray and black. Jacob & Co collaborated with DM Surfaces to create femtolaser technology with high intensity and precision that provided an unparalleled level of realism and clarity. The key image of Don Vito Corleone, etched between the ears at six o’clock. “We’ve gone through countless prototypes, each one slightly different, each one better, each more accurate. We wanted a truly cinematic effect that triggers emotions, ”says Benjamin Arabov.

Jacob & Co. will produce 50 pieces of the Opera Godfather 50th Anniversary watch in a white gold case measuring 49mm x 21mm thick. It is valued at $ 500,000. The package includes a specially made fountain pen and a whiskey carafe.
