McLaren Northern Michigan, a 202-bed regional hospital based in Petoskey serving 22 counties, has been honored by Healthgrades with a pair of accolades for excellence in cardiovascular services. A leading nationwide source of comprehensive consumer healthcare information for patients to make informed medical decisions, Healthgrades confirms the high level of specialist care and better performance at McLaren Northern Michigan with:
America’s Top 100 Hospitals Award for Cardiac Care
America’s Top 100 Hospitals Award for Coronary Intervention
Additionally, the hospital was awarded the Healthgrades’ Pulmonary Care Excellence Award.
By measuring and evaluating clinical outcomes, patient safety and patient experiences, as well as other quality measures as the basis of its criteria, Healthgrades compared more than 4,400 hospitals in the United States. With a pair of accolades, McLaren Northern Michigan ranks among the top heart care programs in the country.
As a reference hospital, McLaren Northern Michigan is one of the few sources of specialized medical care in the region.
“Given the presence of cardiovascular disease and cardiac emergencies, you want your community to feel comfortable knowing that resources are available to them to provide effective and efficient cardiovascular care,” said Dr. Harry Colfer, a cardiovascular surgeon at McLaren Northern Michigan. “We are honored to have earned these awards and share them with the people who have made these achievements possible. And most importantly, we are proud to be this resource for our region ”.
In terms of the Cardiac Care Award, Healthgrades recognizes the ability of hospitals to successfully perform coronary artery bypass surgery, interventional and valve surgery, and treat heart attacks and heart failure. The Coronary Intervention Award identifies a hospital’s expertise in performing coronary interventions, such as stent angioplasty.
A team of cardiologists and clinical specialists in the Cardiovascular Services division have worked to build and expand the program in recent years, regularly introducing new, state-of-the-art procedures to treat many forms of chronic heart disease while maintaining proficiency in emergency – potentially life-saving – care.
McLaren Northern Michigan is consistently recognized for its cardiovascular care, earning its status as one of the top 50 cardiovascular hospitals in the nation for five consecutive years by Fortune and IBM Watson Health.
These awards are in line with recent accolades that ranked McLaren Northern Michigan as the country’s best medium-sized community hospital on the Fortune / Merative list. The hospital has also received many high-level awards for post-stroke care from the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association.
Various forms of cardiovascular disease are the leading cause of death in the United States, responsible for one in five deaths.
