Gophers are visiting Michigan, visiting Illinois this weekend

MINNEAPOLIS – The ninth Minnesota Golden Gophers (13-7, 8-4 Big Ten) head home in their 2022 regular season. Minnesota will host Michigan for “Alumni Night” on Friday, November 4, then travel to Illinois for road tilt in Sunday, November 6. B1G + will be broadcasting both games, with Bill Doleman (play-by-play) and Lori Thomas (analyst) calling for action on Friday night. Broadcasters are TBD on Sunday afternoon.

26 – The 2021 season is the 26th year that the Golden Gophers have advanced to the NCAA tournament. Minnesota also advanced to the tournament seven seasons in a row and nine out of ten seasons under head coach Hugh McCutcheon.
19 – Minnesota’s 28 scheduled matches are against teams in the NCAA 2021 tournament. 12 of these matches are against teams that advanced to Sweet 16 or later.
12 – Minnesota’s first 20 games were played against ranked opponents. Gophers have 6-6 in this competition.

4 – Libero graduate CC McGraw it currently ranks 4th all time in Minnesota with 1779 excavations in a career. Last Saturday she overtook Jessica Granquist (2008-11) taking 4th place in history. Dalianliz Rosado (1870) comes in third.
2 – Hugh McCutcheon became the second-best coach in Minnesota history thanks to a win over Michigan State last Sunday in his 264th victory at the head of Minnesota.

• The Gophers will welcome more than 60 alumni on Friday night to their game against Michigan. Graduates will be honored in the ceremony between the second and third sets. It is also worth mentioning that the 2002 Big Ten Champion Gophers will also be recognized during the match.

• The Gophers continued their strong game with a sweep of Michigan on Wednesday 26 October. Landfair posted the top 13 team kills while Carter stand had eight and five blocks for the squad. CC McGraw had 15 kicks in a Minnesota win of 25-20, 25-14, 25-11 over the Spartans. Minnesota has won seven of the last eight.
• Minnesota fell in a fierce Battle at Number 5 in Wisconsin, 20-25, 20-25, 25-16, 23-25. Landfair and Wucherer had 15 kills each, while Booth had 10 blocks. The Gophers beat the UW (0.211 to 0.192), outranked (69 to 59) and blocked (14 to 11), but outranked seven to one.

scouting MICHIGAN
• UM is headed by head coach Mark Rosen, who has won 674 matches in his historic coaching career. He has spent the last 23 years in Michigan, competing in the NCAA tournament 19 times.
• Michigan finished 9-1 in non-contest with Duke being the only loss. Wolverines’ best conference victory this season came on September 24 on the No. 9 tour with Penn State. From the start of 3-1 in the league competitions UM passed 2-6.
• The Wolverines are ranked 36th nationally and 4th in the Big Ten for a hit count of 0.256. Jess Mruzik is eighth in the B1G with 3.49 kills per set, while Hannah Grant comes in second in the pit (4.61 dps).

• Illinois is run by six-year-old coach Chris Tamas, who is 110-63 during his tenure with Champaign. He led Ilini to the 2018 Final Four and a 32-4 record in his best season so far.
• The Illinois are in command of Raina Terry, who ranks fourth in the B1G with 4.11 kills per set. Setter Diana Brown is third in assists with 10.33 per set, while Terry is second with 0.44 aces per set.
• UI went 0-3 against ranked teams in non-conference mode and is 1-6 against ranked teams in Big Ten. They have defeated Maryland and Rutgers twice, Northwestern once and Penn State once for their B1G wins.

• All the time Minnesota are on 60-16 against Michigan. The U has won 11 of the last 13 against Wolverines, with losses coming in 2014 and 2021. The Gophers defeated Michigan in three series on the October 7th Ann Arbor road.
• The Gophers lead the all-time series against Illinois, 43-40-1, including a record 14-2 under Hugh. Minnesota have won seven in a row and 11 of the last 12 against the Illinois. A lonely failure in this episode happened in 2017. The Gophers beat Illinois in three sets last year in Champaign and three sets this year in Minneapolis (October 15).

• Recruit No. 1 in class 2020, Taylor Fair In the spring of 2021, she had an excellent season in her first year. She placed second at the Gophers for the number of kills per set, and won first-team recognition at All-Big Ten and AVCA All-America. Last fall was not so fun for Landfair as she sat most of the year (only played nine games) with a stomach injury.
• She is back and better than ever in 2022, leading the ‘U’ in kills from 4.50 per set. She also averages over 1.6 kicks and nearly 0.6 blocks per set, playing all six spins. Landfair was named the MVP Big Ten / Big 12 Challenge after leading all players on points and kills. She led Minnesota in 19 kills out of 20 in 2022.
• Landfair ranks second in the Big Ten and 12th nationally with 4.50 kills per set. Its 5.04 p / s is in 13th place.
• Landfair is one of only two players in the country to have more than 10 kills in every game this season.

CC McGraw currently ranks 4th in Gophers history with 1779 excavations. CC now has 221 kicks to become just the 10th player in B1G volleyball history and the second Gopher to reach 2,000 in his career.
• McGraw is ranked 22nd among the active players in the First League in the excavations and the first place in the Big Ten.
• In three of its four seasons, McGraw entered Minnesota’s Top 20 on most excavations of the season. In 2018 she was 428 (18th), 450 (16th) in 2019 and the best 510 in 2021 (12th). He is the second Gopher to have three or more seasons with 400 or more excavations. So far, in 2022, McGraw has completed 224 excavations.

• Minnesota ranks 2nd in the Big Ten and 30th nationally for 0.259 percentages per annum. Only Wisconsin (0.261) comes ahead of Gopher.
• Minnesota leads B1G in conference games, scoring 0.270.
• “U” has hit .300 or more eight times this year, in four of the last seven appearances.
• Gopher is fifth in the conference with 12.49 assists per set.

• So far, in 2022, Minnesota is ranked 3rd in the Big Ten and 4th nationally with 2.88 blocks per set.
Carter stand leads the Gophers and is fifth in the B1G with 1.40 blocks per set.
Naya Gros it comes in 8th place with 1.38 blocks per set.

• Recruit No. 14 in class 2022, middle blocker Carter stand had an immediate impact on the Gophers roster. In her first collegiate game, she recorded a first-year record for Minnesota with 11 blocks against Baylor.
• She had blocks in 16 out of 20 games and is placed second in the U with 81 points (1.40 points). He scored his first double-digit match with 12 on 9/17 against the State of Washington.
• Booth is fourth in the Big Ten and in the top 15 nationally in blocks per set (1.40). She is one of only seven Big Ten players to have double-digit blocks this year – she was 11 in the opening season against Baylor and 10 in Wisconsin on October 29. She is the only Big Ten player with two or … more 10+ block games in 2022. She is also the only first-grader to make it to the top ten of the Big Ten this season in terms of blocks per set.

Melani Shaffmaster leads Big Ten in doubles (10+ assists and kicks) out of 10 per season. Illinois’ Diana Brown is second out of nine while Indiana’s Camryn Haworth is eight.

• During their Minnesota career, coach McCutcheon’s teams have a record of 46-13 after losing. The Gophers are losing 5-1 in 2022. They will get a chance to improve that mark on Friday against Michigan.

• Minnesota will host Maryland on Friday, November 11 at 6:30 pm CT, before honoring five seniors in a senior match against Indiana on Sunday. Sunday morning will start at 2:00 PM CT on B1G +.
